Department of European Law

Research areas, joint publications of employees of the Chair of European Law

The head of the Department of European Law at the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences is Prof.Monika Szwarc.

The research conducted by the employees of the Department of European Law at the ILS–PAS concerns the application and implementation of European Union law in the national legal order. In particular, the issues of the judicial application of EU law and the protection of human rights and fundamental rights are analysed, and these issues are addressed in both general and theoretical terms, as well as in regard to selected areas of European Union law, such as judicial cooperation in criminal matters, asylum and immigration law and anti-discrimination law. An important leitmotiv of the research is the identification of constitutional and axiological challenges for (the unity of) the European Union and attempts to respond to these challenges. One additional important area of research conducted at the Department of European Law surrounds issues of European constitutionalism, in particular the national and constitutional identity of a member state of the European Union and pluralistic concepts of the relationship between EU law and national law. The research is conducted within the framework of research grants and in cooperation with recognised national and foreign research centres. The results of the research are published in peer-reviewed national and foreign journals and monographs.
