The Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences publishes peer-reviewed monographs and anthologies in the field of legal sciences and criminology. The high standard of publications is supervised by the Scientific Council of the Publishing House, chaired by the director, Dr hab. Celina Nowak.


The Scientific Council of the Publishing House also consists of the following members:

The publications by the Institute of Legal Sciences contain original academic findings on important issues of the legal and related sciences, which are worthy of popularising, both among national research centres and in the international scientific community.

Since 2018, the Publishing House has been issuing Studia Prawnicze PAN [The Legal Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences], published continuously since 1963.

The first monographs will soon be published. Persons interested in cooperating with the publishing house are welcome to consult the Publishing Policy and the Institutional Openness Policy and Publishing Ethics, in accordance with the standards recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

The publishing procedure is defined in Article 4 of the ‘Rules for preparing texts for publication in the ILS PAS Publishing House’. Additionally, the Scientific Council of the ILS PAS considers proposals for papers that have not been submitted to the Publication Plan of the ILS PAS quarterly. Publication proposals should be submitted by handing in an publishing with the publishing proposal in room 322. Moreover, an electronic version of the application and a manuscript of the publication proposal (in PDF format) should be sent to wydawnictwo@inp.pan.pl.

The Publishing House applies uniform standards for qualifying scholarly monographs and collections for publication, regardless of whether the fee for publication has been paid and in what amount.

Publishing proposals accepted by the Scientific Council of the Publishing House are subjected to a double review procedure. Reviewers associated with the Publishing House observe the ethical standards specified in thePublishing Ethics and are obliged to submit a conflict of interest disclosure.

To maintain high recognition of the published titles, the Publishing House makes sure that the publications meet the editorial standards required by reference databases, especially Web of Science. ILS PAS prefers publications published in the open access model.


ILS PAS is included in the list of journals that publish peer-reviewed scholarly monographs as announced by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MNiSW) on 30 September 2020.

Frontier Research

The ‘Frontier Research’ series offers shorter publications in Polish and English that discuss the results of pioneering, cognitive, theoretical and practical research in the legal sciences, which lead to the development of new knowledge and fundamental and groundbreaking results, change the understanding of the legal system and have a high application value in the socioeconomic sphere.

All texts published as electronic publications in the Frontier Research series follow the open access model under a CC-BY 4.0 licence.

The series was initiated by Dr Marina Foltea’s publication entitled „EU-Tobacco Industry agreements and beyond”, which is the outcome of a project within the PMI Impact programme.


Publications:


Kriminologia [Criminology]

The ‘Criminology’ series will include books that describe and analyse current criminological problems, such as the situation of crime in Poland, the characteristics of the perpetrators of criminal acts and the question of the effectiveness of re-socialising them and research on the functioning of the justice system. The series will also include works on victimology and criminal policy. The main goal of publishing the books will be to present empirical studies and the findings of analyses based on them. The published monographs will also include theoretical studies.

The series was inaugurated by a jubilee book dedicated to Prof. Irena Rzeplińska, entitled Why do we need criminology, which contained works of criminologists: established researchers and younger scientists from all national centres. The publication is not only a tribute to the lifelong academic work of Professor Rzeplińska, but also a valuable source of information on the dilemmas and challenges of contemporary criminology, academic research, methodology and its practical and legislative applications.

Dr Justyna Włodarczyk-Madejska’s book entitled Skazani na wychowanie. Stosowanie środków izolacyjnych wobec nieletnich [Sentenced to education: Application of isolation measures towards minors] has also been published as part of the series.

Rozprawy Prawnicze [Legal Studies]

This is a series of monographs featuring comprehensive discussions of selected areas of law.

Specialists from the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences are involved in the work on Legal Studies, so that this regularly updated collection of essays becomes a knowledge repository of a wide range of current issues.

The first publication in the series, Mateusz Błachucki’s dissertation entitled Ponadnarodowe sieci organów administracji publicznej oraz ich wpływ na krajowy porządek prawny [Transnational networks of public administration bodies and their influence on the national legal order], carefully analyses the area of influence of networks of public administration bodies and the role that these networks play in the development of other branches of law. The problem of antimonopoly regulation in agriculture in European Union legislation is dealt with in the next monograph of the series, written by Dr Paweł Popardowski.

The series also includes publications by Dr Anna Hernandez-Połczyńska, Dr Małgorzata Łączkowska-Porawska and Dr Joanna Mucha-Kujawa.

In cooperation with the publishing house C. H. Beck, the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences has published a series of five book series on the systems of law:

The Institute of Legal Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences is also the publisher of a collection of monographs entitled ‘Rozprawy Prawnicze/Legal Studies’. It is also the publisher of a collection of monographs entitled ‘Legal studies: A monographic series.’ The works of the Department of Criminology of the Institute of Philosophy of the Polish Academy of Sciences are published in the series ‘Criminology’.

Criminal Law System

Criminal Law System, a scholarly work in eleven volumes that presents the entire system of Polish criminal law. The division of this vast subject matter, prepared with great care, allows the authors, the most eminent experts in criminal law in Poland, to carry out an in-depth analysis of all the issues of this branch of law that both theoreticians and practitioners encounter. The System of Medical Law

The System of Medical Law is a six-volume work that comprehensively discusses the whole Polish system of medical law. The System of Private Law

The System of Private Law series is a multi-volume work published in cooperation with the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, prepared by the most eminent Polish authors, which comprehensively discusses the entire Polish private law system.

The substantive editing of the whole collection was supervised by Professor Zbigniew Radwański, whose work is continued by Professor Bogudar Kordasiewicz as Deputy Editor-in-Chief. The Academic Editors of particular volumes are eminent specialists in given fields.

The System of European Union Law

The System of European Union Law is the only extensive and comprehensive publication on the Polish market that discusses the legal order of the European Union and Poland’s position in this system. The publication takes into account both Polish and European literature on EU law and the latest case law, and thus new opinions and analyses of the issues discussed.

An excellent group of authors, the best Polish specialists in European Union law, with participation of representatives of both theory and practice ensures high substantive quality of this publication.

The editor-in-chief of the series is Prof. Andrzej Wróbel, an academic teacher, a judge of the Supreme Court, between 2011 and 2017, a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal and the editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine Państwo i Prawo/State and Law.


The System of European Union Law, due to the vastness of the subject matter and the complexity of the issues it covers, includes 16 volumes.

  • This first volume of the series is devoted to the foundations and sources of European Union law. It discusses the general characteristics of the sources of law, the theory of European integration and the values and objectives of the European Union.
  • Volume II presents the principles and fundamental rights of the European Union.
  • Volume III is concerned with the interpretation of EU law and its application in the case law of the Polish judiciary.
  • Volume IV of the series focusses on the constitutionalisation and internationalisation of European Union law.
  • Volume V is devoted to legal protection, in particular judicial protection and legal sanctions for non-compliance with EU law imposed both by Union bodies and by national courts and authorities.
  • Volume VI discusses anti-discrimination law in depth, especially the content of the prohibition of discrimination, including prohibited criteria, types of discrimination and exceptions to the prohibition of discrimination.
  • Volume VII presents the law of the internal market and analyses the pharmaceutical, financial and energy markets.
  • Volume VIII covers the area of freedom, security and justice of the European Union. The publication discusses judicial cooperation in criminal and civil matters in the European Union, among other topics.
  • Volume IX, on Competition Law, broadly presents the substantive and legal rules of competition protection and explains how they are applied and enforced.
  • Volume X deals with issues of state aid and EU funds.
  • Volume XI includes financial law, tax law, customs law and public procurement law.
  • Volume XII A covers industrial property law.
  • Volume XII B introduces the issues of copyright and related rights and further discusses in detail the directives of the European Union related to this.
  • Volume XIII outlines EU labour and social security law, focussing on aspects such as the protection of work and specific groups of workers and the coordination of social security systems.
  • Volume XIV focusses on environmental law and examines in detail the subject of environmental protection and horizontally and sectorally targeted protection.
  • Volume XV of the series is devoted to consumer law. In particular, the work explains the structure and types of consumer contracts.
