The Institute of Law Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, is very pleased to be hosting an online event to present and discuss Gül Ince-Beqo’s recently published open-access book, “Diasporic Marginalities and the Second-Best Destination: Exploring Migration from Turkey to Italy” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026). The book examines Turkish and Kurdish settlement in Italy as an under-studied “second-best destination” within Europe’s stratified mobility regime. Drawing on decade-long ethnographic fieldwork and more than 100 interviews, it explores how border governance, legal status, labour markets and welfare arrangements shape migrant lives, while developing the concepts of “learning to stay” and “diasporic marginalities.” The author, Gül Ince-Beqo, is affiliated with the University of Milan, a consortium member in the Horizon Europe FAiR project, in which the Institute of Law Studies took part between 2023 and 2026.
The online book discussion will take place on Tuesday, 3 November, from 2:30 to 4:00 pm (CET). The discussion will be moderated by Witold Klaus, with Gül Ince-Beqo presenting the book, followed by reflections from the discussants (Antonella Patteri & Daria Krivonos) and an open discussion with participants.
To take part in the event, please register here. The meeting link will be shared with registered participants.
