The publication series of the Institute of Law Studies PAS entitled Nauki Penalne [Penal Sciences] (formerly: Kryminologia) publishes original empirical and theoretical works in the field of penal sciences, especially substantive and procedural criminal law and criminology. In the area of criminal law, the series covers current issues of national, European and international criminal law. In the broader area of penal sciences, the series includes, inter alia, studies on crime and offenders, victimological studies, studies on justice institutions, criminal and penitentiary policy, and works on research methods and theoretical concepts in criminology. Published monographs and collective works containing a description and analysis of current problems of criminal law and criminological issues, including a picture of crime in Poland, characteristics of offenders, including the issue of the effectiveness of their re-socialisation, and studies on the functioning of the justice system. The series will also include works on victimology and criminal policy.
Nauki Penalne [Penal Sciences] series aspires to become a forum for scholarly communication for high quality theoretical and empirical research on national and European crime, criminal law, penal policy and punishment as well as crime-related phenomena. The publications in this series provide insights into the development of crime, criminal law and criminal justice in the European Union and on the European continent, from both legal and criminological perspectives. The aim is to deepen the scientific and practical understanding of the discipline of criminal law and its evolving interactions with other legal disciplines globally.
The series was inaugurated in 2019 under the title: Criminology. The first scientific editor (lead) of the series was Prof. Dr Hab. Irena Rzeplińska. The series published monographs and collective works by the staff of the Department of Criminology of ILS PAS.
In 2024, Prof. Dr Hab. Celina Nowak became the leading editor of the series.At that time, there was also a change in the title of the publishing series, reflecting the actual extension of the thematic scope of the monographs – to topics from the penal sciences in the broadest sense. At the same time, the series opened up to publications by external authors.
The ILS PAS Publishing House is open to the publication of works by both experienced and young researchers. The series publishes single or multi-author monographs as well as edited collective works. All papers submitted to the ILS PAS Publishing House undergo a review process (internal and external). The outcome of the review decides whether they will be sent for publication.
